Description
Who would have thought that in 2020, the daily routine we enjoyed and took for granted would suddenly disappear?
One day, due to the sudden epidemic, our daily lives suddenly changed into something we had never experienced before. There have been numerous epidemics in the past, and we would always hurry to deal with it, but only in the moment. Eventually, when a new epidemic broke out, we couldn’t respond properly resulting in our system being paralyzed. After the outbreak, numerous countries have tried a variety of ways to prevent and deal with the epidemic.
Despite this, the epidemic has been widely spread, mostly due to something called “super spreaders”. It started from the first spreaders and through a domino effect it has grown into an uncontrollable epidemic. That is why it is important to prevent the spread starting from these preliminary spreaders. Therefore, we must establish facilities to manage incoming foreigners in advance to prevent the disease from spreading into the country.
The way diseases infect into a country varies. For example, the Black Death in Europe, 200 million people died to insufficient methods like now. But, at the same time, Italy was able to effectively contain and manage the disease, by arranging the roads and buildings, with the city as the center, like spider webs and making a star shaped border where every direction was visible, like the city “Palmanova” today. Like this, a space called a “border” has played an important role in disease spread prevention since the long ago. However, since back then until now, filter systems to handle infectious diseases has been built horizontally, having clear limitations. We believe that if these filter systems were built vertically, the existing limitations would go away. The only space that could solve both “border” and “horizontal city” problems is a high-rise space that administrates incoming foreigners.
The current epidemic related management of incoming foreigners is testing them individually before moving them to a space where they can quarantine for a set amount of time. However, there is a risk of exposing contagions to others during the point of entering the country to the quarantine location, national loss, and escape risk with this structure. It, with those dangers in mind, is important to shorten the movement from entry to the quarantine area to reduce situations in advance where the epidemic could spread. What we propose is building skyscrapers at each entry point of the country so that individuals will be independent on moment of entry before going to a ‘safe’ space by themselves. This building will be in the form of a Ferris wheel, so that it can physically lift up into the air during the incubation period to solve various risk factors.
The people will be isolated and live/managed in a standardized space. We propose a skyscraper that is a combination of a Ferris wheel’s module storage system, and a hospital’s ward system. This means the people can live and get tested at the same time, and they can be moved directly to the medical ward if a positive were to occur. They then can leave the space and finally enter the country once quarantine stage is over and it is confirmed that there are no problems relating to the disease. This is our proposed skyscraper.
